SPECIAL MATERIALS TESTING

Regenco regularly performs expert quality control testing of activated carbon for the wastewater industry as well as specialized research and development of hard activated carbon anodes. Our laboratory capabilities extend to the analysis of catalysts and catalyst carriers (such as zeolites), ceramics, polymers, pharmaceutical powders, and various nanostructural materials. We are a organizational member of ASTM and participate in the technical committee D28 - Activated Carbon.

All sample bags and/or boxes have to be either shipped or dropped off at the specified location; we do not perform pick-ups.

To ensure accurate and efficient processing of your lab assignments, please include comprehensive sample information (industry and specification of material) with your sample shipment. WE WILL NOT TEST CONTAMINATED, USED OR TOXIC MATERIALS! If any of the tests come up suspect for these types, we will immediately inform the customer and charge a environmental handling/disposal fee.

Additionally, please ensure all materials are packaged and transported in strict accordance with the applicable ASTM and material-specific standards; these protocols are essential for maintaining sample purity and safeguarding our technical team during the testing process. Ensure all sample jars are sealed tight so no moisture escapes.

Apparent Density (ASTM D2854) - Determine the apparent density of granular activated carbon (GAC), defining it as the mass per unit volume of free-falling carbon particles. This can provide insight to the percentage of spent activated carbon without chemical testing, if tested before use and during/after use. Typical apparent densities range between 0.3 to 0.7 g/cm3. (Test applicable to materials other than activated carbon).

Ash Content (ASTM D2866) - This test method determines the amount and composition of the ash that may influence the capabilities and certain desired properties of activated carbon.

Sieve Analysis (ASTM Dxxxx) - This test method determines the gradation of the activated carbon sample, from #4 sieve (20xx mm) to powder size #400 sieve ( xxx mm)

Moisture content (ASTM D2867) - determine the moisture content of the activated carbon. (Test applicable to materials other than activated carbon).

pH (ASTM D3838) - determine the value of pH for the activated carbon, to indicate if any acid from the chemical / thermal activation process is left over. Typically, activated carbon is washed with distilled water to ensure a neutral pH. (Test applicable to materials other than activated carbon).

Ball-pan Hardness (ASTM D3802) - determine "ball-pan hardness" of granular activated carbon, which measures the material's resistance to physical degradation (wear/breakage) by shaking a sample with steel balls, with a higher percentage indicating better durability. Typical high-quality carbons often show values of 98-99%.

Iodine Capacity Number (ASTM D4607) - determine the relative activation level of unused or reactivated carbons by adsorption of iodine from aqueous solution. The amount of iodine absorbed (in milligrams) by 1 g of carbon using test conditions listed herein is called the iodine number. The typical range for hard activated carbon is 500 mg/g to 1,200 mg/g, which is equivalent to surface area of carbon between 900 and 1,100 m2/g.

Methylene Blue Test (GB/T 12496.10) - determine the amount of Methylene Blue dye adsorbed by the activated carbon, hence the adsorption capacity of activated carbon on similar medium molecular weight organic matter.

Adsorptive Capacity*

Aqueous Phase Isotherm (ASTM D3860) Liquid-Phase Adsorption: generate an adsorption isotherm (a Freundlich plot) to determine the maximum capacity of the carbon for specific pollutants.
Butane Working Capacity (ASTM D5228) Gas/Vapor Saturation: measure both the total saturation of butane on virgin carbon and the amount of butane retained after a dry air purge.
Butane Activity (ASTM D5742) - Gas/Vapor Saturation: define the total amount of butane adsorbed on the carbon sample at saturation, expressed as a mass percentage of the carbon.

We do not perform field test Carbon Saturation by Temperature Rise Upon Immersion (ASTM D7385).

Advanced Test Suite: These tests are applicable to materials other than activated carbon:

Total and External Surface Area (ASTM D6556) - measure the total and external surface area of carbon blacks and other materials using multipoint gas adsorption, based on the B.E.T. (Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller) theory of multilayer gas adsorption behavior. The results includes the total surface area, inclusive of micropores, pore diameters less than 2 nm (20 Å).
Micropore Volume (ASTM D4365) - identify micropore volume and matrix surface area, using t-plot analysis from gas adsorption techniques.
Pore Size Distributions (ASTM D4641) - This calculates pore distribution (typically for mesopores) from gas desorption isotherms.
